Saturn’s Rings

Saturn’s Rings

As winter approaches temperature cools, the night sky becomes clearer, the stars and planets begin to emerge. For centuries the stars have been a constant and familiar friend in the dark of night. My feelings towards the night sky can often be summed up with this quote by the English Poet Sarah Williams:

Though my soul may set in darkness,

it will rise in perfect light.

I have loved the stars too fondly

To be fearful of the night.

Saturn’s Rings is a fun and gorgeous project by the designer Cheri Owen. I used Frolicking Feet Transitions Color-Block Yarn in Pumpkin Botanical to achieve the beautiful tonal center surrounded by variegated “rings”. This project took about 15 hours to complete and was of an intermediate difficulty.

This pattern was designed by the talented Cheri Owen (VeryBusyMonkey), who is a professor by day and knitwear designer by night. She has so many beautiful patterns it’s hard to choose just one! This Saturn’s Rings Shawl is part of her VBM Shawl Collection 5 – Astronomy which features shawls inspired by various astrological bodies. For this project we suggest using fingering weight yarn. This pattern also lends itself very well to color blocked, gradient or highly variegated yarns. The “elongated twist” stitch in the pattern need to be done very carefully but becomes much simpler as the pattern goes on and you get use to it. When done correctly the “twist effect”, along with the change of texture, from ring, to ring create a stunning FO. I added additional rings to use up all my yarn. How could I waste any of the Frolicking Feet Transitions? It’s way too gorgeous to waste!

I added in a beaded picot bind-off along the bottom edge for two reasons. First, I wanted to use up all the yarn I had and experience every inch of the color blocks. Second, I want to help marry the colors in the yarn, so I selected a square 6/0 silver-lined rainbow root beer bead to help do so. It worked out fabulously and added a little pizazz to the pattern for a great finished edge!

The Frolicking Feet Transition yarn is a wonderful pull from the center yarn that included four different color that merge and blend themselves together beautifully. It is the perfect yarn for when you want different colors but don’t want to buy four different colored yarns
