Ship to Shore Shawl

Ship to Shore Shawl

The official start of summer is less than a month away! I get excited thinking about all the beach outings, late night picnics, barbecues, and so on! At the same time, I get a little nervous. I get nervous because it gets warm… very warm and it’s not very comfortable working with wool. What’s a girl that’s addicted to knitting and crocheting to do?

This season is the perfect time to try your hand shawl knitting! Particularly lace shawl knitting with linens and cottons.

Drum roll please….

The Ship to Shore Shawl!!!

shiptoshore3

This shawl pattern was designed by Katie Rempe from Kater Tater Knits. It’s a quick knit with easy to follow directions and it takes just one skein of Shibui Linen, a fingering weight yarn, that comes in 50 gram hanks of 330 yards. This pattern features a few lace stitch combinations to practice and add to your skill set including increases and decreases with purl stitches, the knot stitch, and picot edging. Kate made a video tutorial on her YouTube channel to help knitters with the KNOT stitch, which is really helpful!

Rhonda used one and a half hanks (for a larger shawl) of Shibui Linen in Lime with size US 9, 24″ circular needles. She made a few modifications to the pattern to jazz it up a bit.

And here’s Rhonda’s finished Ship to Shore

Gorgeous!

We are absolutely in love with the Color Affection Shawl by Veera Välimäki. In fact, we love it so much that we held a class here at our LYS and the results were pretty great.

Here are some of our FO’s from Rhonda and our customers…

The pattern is for beginner/advanced beginner knitters who want to try their hands at shawl knitting. You can make it with either lace, fingering, or sock weight yarn, on circular needles. It’s a great way to practice color changes, increases, short rows, but done in an effortless garter stitch.

The garter stitch is simple but allows the colors and stripes to shine through without too much distraction!

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day!

Happy Earth Day everybody! Today marks the 45th anniversary of the modern environmental movement for a healthy sustainable Earth! It’s a day where we take time to admire, appreciate and help our Earth be a better place for us and our little ones.

It is a celebration of our Earth but should also serve as a day to help each other find ways to make our homes, locally or on a global level, be cleaner.  Today reminds us to be more conscious of our actions and the impact they have on Earth.

What does knitting and crocheting have to do with Earth Day?

Eco friendly knitting and crocheting projects!!!

In celebration of Earth Day, here at the Yarn Attic, we have compiled some great patterns and awesome yarns to make environmentally friendly reusable products, that in turn will help decrease waste.

Tahki Yarns Cotton Classic is DK weight yarn of 100% mercerized cotton, that has a beautiful variety of colors.

Rowan All Season Cotton is a worsted weight yarn cotton and acrylic been, perfect for reusable bags!

Rowan Pure Linen is a dk/sport weight 100% pure linen yarn, capable of wonders!

Ty-Dy by Knit One Crochet Too is a rainbow  ball of worsted weight, 100% cotton yarn. It is an awesome choice for market bags, (as well soft transitional garments, summer scarves!)

One of my favorites is Big Ribbon by Katia Yarns, a cotton/polyester blend, in super bulky weight! Great for market bags, and even rugs!

The icky truth about plastic bags…

A major problem, according to marine biologists and scientists, is the accumulation of plastic bags in the oceans and local water ways. Fish and other sea life have been harmed in so many ways, getting caught in the plastic bags.

Why not make a bag?

They not only make great gifts, and really, how many bags can one really have? (The answer is, you can never have enough.)

Here is a round up of great bag patterns

Bringing wine to the party? Why not tote it around in nylon mesh wine bag?

This pattern by Lisette Ariola is available on Ravelry for free!

Unicorn Tails!

Unicorn Tails!

It feels like winter is never going to end! This has been one of the coldest winters in New Jersey and even as I blog now, I’m hearing meteorologists talk about yet another snowstorm on the way! I can’t pretend I’m not a little excited about staying in and knitting!

Here at the Yarn Attic we are currently working on a few projects using Madelinetosh Unicorn Tails. We are all about these little guys!

image_medium2 (1)There are just so many possibilities!!! These little babies come in 52 yard “mini skeins”of Tosh Merino Light yarn. Unicorn Tails are a single ply, 100% superwash merino wool, that come in an assortment of colors, ranging from neutral colors like Silver Fox and Antique Lace, to neon, eye-candy colors like Edison Bulb, Neon Peach, and Pop Rocks. The bursts of color are so refreshing and reminiscent of springy florals and summertime festivals and carnivals. They take us away from this snowy, cold weather!!

Rhonda has made these beautiful knit necklaces in the colors Mandala, Coquette, Pop Rocks, Flashdance, Worm Denim, and Fathom with Kirsten Johnstone’s sev[en] circle pattern available on Ravelry.

She also made these gorgeous Purl Bee Colorblock Hand Warmers using fathom, Coquette, Charcoal, Mandala, and Big Sur.

Aaaaand is currently working on this pretty Unicorn Stripes scarf by Antonia Shankland that is available in the Madelinetosh Ravelry store.

Moonraker Knitted Shawl

Moonraker Knitted Shawl

I recently finished this gorgeous Moonraker Knitted Shawl using a pattern by Melanie Berg. This project uses a beautiful Rowan Fingering Weight yarn that is a blend of fine merino wool, royal alpaca and cashmere. It took be about 30 hours to finish this project and is a fun colorful knit.

This asymmetrical shawl incorporates a knitted broomstick and garter stitch. The skill level to knit this would be intermediate though once you get the hang of the broomstick stitch it becomes much simpler.

Moonraker-2_medium2[1]

I was considering adding on an 8th block: Colors C,C,C,A (same as 6th block). I wanted the overall design to have an odd number of blocks on each side of the color change. By adding this 8th block and following set pattern, I would have 213 stitches before bind off. I planned to increase last working of Sec 1 in color B from 9x to 15x. Therefore, I would have ended up with 219 stitches before bindoff. Instead, I stuck with the 7 blocks as originally designed. However, I completed 15, instead of 9, repeats of Section 1 (rows 1 and 2). Therefore, I had 195 stitches before bindoff.

Despite being asymmetrical this shawl measures over 6 feet in width and give ample coverage. It can be adapted to suit any color scheme and length making it a wonderful knit for the fall and winter seasons.

Moonraker 1

The cashmere in the yarn give it great stitch definition and lends a wonderful drapability to the shawl. The colors in the yarn blend beautifully. When knitted this yarn is extremely soft and light yet warm, perfect for fall and winter weather projects.

Moonraker yarn

This shawl is perfect for a cool fall evening and we are looking forward to featuring it in our LYS. Come stop by to see (and feel) it yourself!
