Aisling

Aisling

We are absolutely in love with Aisling by Justyna Lorkowska of Lete’s Knits.

Aisling (pronounced Ashlyn) is a gorgeous two color shawl knit primarily in Stockinette stitch, with eyelets and features a lovely lace and cable border. Its shape is a wide crescent with five alternating repeats of wide eyelet pattern in the main color and a garter stitch pattern in the contrast color.

Once the body of the shawl is knit, a “knitted cast-on” is done to begin the bottom cabled border. The bottom border pattern joins to the main body of the shawl on every right side row creating a lovely horizontal braid in the contrast color between the body and bottom border. Using a ssk (slip, slip, knit) at the end of each right side row creates the braid. A lovely picot edging completed the elegant bottom border.

Gauge is not critical for this project, but good blocking is recommended to truly make the bottom border come to life.

Rhonda used Baah Yarn La Jolla in Rosemary for the body and Masala for contrast and the bottom border. La Jolla is comes in 100 gram, 400 yard skeins of 4ply fingering yarn. It is 100% Superwash Merino Wool and machine washable.

Aisling can also be done with one color and look just as spectacular. You will need about 875 yards to complete the shawl.

aisling4If you would prefer the shawl to have a smaller wingspan you may adjust the size by knitting only four repeats of the main body, then proceed to the bottom border. However, when the wingspan is reduced so is the finished depth of the shawl.

We suggest using any fingering weight yarn with good stitch definition and drapiness for this project.

We are absolutely in love with the Color Affection Shawl by Veera Välimäki. In fact, we love it so much that we held a class here at our LYS and the results were pretty great.

Here are some of our FO’s from Rhonda and our customers…

The pattern is for beginner/advanced beginner knitters who want to try their hands at shawl knitting. You can make it with either lace, fingering, or sock weight yarn, on circular needles. It’s a great way to practice color changes, increases, short rows, but done in an effortless garter stitch.

The garter stitch is simple but allows the colors and stripes to shine through without too much distraction!

Moonraker Knitted Shawl

Moonraker Knitted Shawl

I recently finished this gorgeous Moonraker Knitted Shawl using a pattern by Melanie Berg. This project uses a beautiful Rowan Fingering Weight yarn that is a blend of fine merino wool, royal alpaca and cashmere. It took be about 30 hours to finish this project and is a fun colorful knit.

This asymmetrical shawl incorporates a knitted broomstick and garter stitch. The skill level to knit this would be intermediate though once you get the hang of the broomstick stitch it becomes much simpler.

I was considering adding on an 8th block: Colors C,C,C,A (same as 6th block). I wanted the overall design to have an odd number of blocks on each side of the color change. By adding this 8th block and following set pattern, I would have 213 stitches before bind off. I planned to increase last working of Sec 1 in color B from 9x to 15x. Therefore, I would have ended up with 219 stitches before bindoff. Instead, I stuck with the 7 blocks as originally designed. However, I completed 15, instead of 9, repeats of Section 1 (rows 1 and 2). Therefore, I had 195 stitches before bindoff.

Despite being asymmetrical this shawl measures over 6 feet in width and give ample coverage. It can be adapted to suit any color scheme and length making it a wonderful knit for the fall and winter seasons.

The cashmere in the yarn give it great stitch definition and lends a wonderful drapability to the shawl. The colors in the yarn blend beautifully. When knitted this yarn is extremely soft and light yet warm, perfect for fall and winter weather projects.

This shawl is perfect for a cool fall evening and we are looking forward to featuring it in our LYS. Come stop by to see (and feel) it yourself!
